Calculate multiple float paths in P6

Expose the controlling and near-controlling paths to a selected milestone instead of reporting one critical chain only.

Working definition

A single critical-path filter can hide parallel and converging paths that have nearly the same influence on completion. P6 can calculate multiple float paths ending at a selected activity and rank activities by float path and order. The analysis is most useful when the completion milestone, path method, number of paths, calendars, and scheduling options are recorded with the result.

Choose the finish point explicitly

Multiple-path analysis is relative to a selected ending activity. Use the contractual or management milestone being discussed, not simply the last row in the schedule. Different finish points produce different path sets.

Read path rank with the network

Display Float Path and Float Path Order, then trace relationships and compare total or free float. Path numbering is an analytical aid; it does not replace review of feasibility, risk, constraints, or status quality.

Calculate and review multiple float paths

Perform this on a quality-checked, statused schedule using the same options as the governing calculation.

  1. Select the ending activity

    Identify the contractual or management completion milestone to analyze.

    Verify: The Activity ID and milestone definition are recorded.

  2. Enable multiple paths

    Open Schedule Options and select calculation of multiple float paths ending with the chosen activity.

    Verify: The dialog shows the intended activity and path basis.

  3. Choose the method and count

    Select total-float or free-float path calculation and the number of paths to calculate.

    Verify: The method and count are saved with the analysis record.

  4. Schedule and retain the log

    Run F9 under the controlled data date and options.

    Verify: The schedule log and calculation time are retained.

  5. Display and trace

    Add Float Path and Float Path Order columns, group by Float Path, and use Trace Logic around converging work.

    Verify: Each ranked path can be followed to the selected milestone.

  6. Report the decision signal

    Explain which paths control, which are near-critical, where they converge, and what evidence or mitigation is needed.

    Verify: The report connects path rank to an actionable schedule question.
